False social media challenge brings enquiries to luxury hotel

Ambiente Sedona faced questions about a supposed month-long challenge offering large cash prizes, although the offer did not exist.

In early October, Ambiente Sedona received a call about a challenge someone had seen on social media. The video claimed that people could win thousands or even millions of dollars by spending a month at the luxury resort without leaving its grounds. However, a member of the front desk team explained that the offer was not real. Another caller then asked about the same challenge.

The questions also came from the travel industry. A luxury travel agent in South Korea sent an email saying that several American clients wanted to take part. According to property owner Jennifer May, four different people called the front desk about the challenge over one weekend.

May had previously spoken about videos created using artificial intelligence, or AI, that showed her property inaccurately. She contacted Skift again after finding a new set of misleading videos about the resort. These latest videos were attracting views on social media, while callers were asking hotel staff about a challenge that did not exist.
