Ambiente Sedona received an unusual enquiry in early October: a caller wanted to know about a social media challenge supposedly offering a substantial cash reward for remaining within the luxury resort’s grounds for an entire month. The advertised prizes ranged from thousands to millions of dollars. Although a front desk employee explained that no such promotion existed, another call followed about the same purported offer. The challenge presented a month-long stay without leaving the property as an opportunity to collect money, but the resort had no genuine promotion matching that description.
Interest extended beyond individual callers. A luxury travel agent based in South Korea emailed the property, saying that several clients from the United States were interested in participating. Property owner Jennifer May said four different people had contacted the front desk about the challenge over a single weekend. The enquiries therefore included both direct questions to hotel staff and an email from an agent reporting clients’ interest.
For May, the misleading portrayal of her property was not new. She had previously spoken to Skift about AI-generated videos that depicted the resort inaccurately. After discovering another wave of misleading videos attracting views on social media, she contacted the publication again. This latest episode concerned a fabricated challenge associated with the property, with staff receiving questions about cash rewards that were not part of any real offer.
