EU releases €4.2 billion for Hungary

Hungary can receive EU money again and return to student and research programmes. The EU is still checking conditions for more money.

The EU has lifted limits on money for Hungary. This frees €4.2 billion. Hungary can also return to Erasmus+, a student exchange programme, and Horizon Europe, a research programme.

The EU introduced the limits in 2022 under former leader Viktor Orbán. It had concerns about corruption and respect for the law. Péter Magyar's party won a large election victory. His new government made changes to fight corruption and make its work more open.

Magyar agreed a plan with the European Commission's president for €16.4 billion in total. Hungary seeks €10 billion to help it recover after the pandemic. Another €2.2 billion depends on more freedom in universities. The Commission is checking the conditions. Hungary could receive more money by the year's end.
