At least 27 people were killed in a fire at a bar in Bangkok, Thai authorities said. The venue, Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, is in the Chatuchak district and is known locally as a restaurant and entertainment spot.
The prime minister said he had asked a musician, who was performing when the fire started, what had happened. According to that account, a fire began at a cut-out switch, then events moved very quickly. The musician said there was blasting, and people tried to escape the smoke and flames.
Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt visited the scene and said flammable decorations inside the venue may have helped the fire spread. He also said there were initial reports that tables selling candy and other goods may have blocked fire exits. However, he said that point needed a thorough official investigation by forensic officers.
