Anthropic’s reported assistant salary highlights an AI hiring irony

A reported €145,000 assistant vacancy at Anthropic’s London office prompted online jokes about a leading agentic AI company recruiting a human for duties that software could theoretically perform.

Anthropic reportedly advertised a personal assistant position at its London office with a salary of €145,000, described as approximately $190,000. The vacancy was for an administrative business partner supporting senior go-to-market leaders, whose work concerns bringing products and services to customers. Although the posting has since been removed from the company’s website, a preserved copy retained its description of the role and the qualities expected of applicants. Fast Company contacted Anthropic for comment.

The advertised responsibilities combined scheduling and travel arrangements with management of an executive’s inbox and communications. Filing expense claims and carrying out other office duties were also included. Beyond those practical tasks, the company sought someone organised, attentive to detail and capable of taking initiative. Its requirements emphasised the ability to build strong working relationships and anticipate needs across teams, while responding promptly and delivering work without mistakes. The position therefore called for both the handling of everyday administrative duties and an awareness of what different teams would need, rather than simply the completion of a list of tasks.

Social media users seized on the apparent irony of a leading agentic AI company recruiting a human for such work. AI agents could, at least in theory, handle a substantial share of the responsibilities listed in the advert. One user responded with a joke suggesting that somebody ought to develop a technological tool capable of performing these duties autonomously. The online reaction centred on that contrast between Anthropic’s technology and its advertised human role.
