Ancient Welsh fortification may lend weight to legend of Roman emperor’s camp

A newly discovered fortification linked to the fourth-century emperor Magnus Maximus may offer evidence for his legendary camp in Wales. Known as Macsen Wledig, the ruler also features in the medieval Mabinogion.

An archaeologist has uncovered an ancient fortification in Wales linked to Magnus Maximus, the fourth-century Roman emperor. The discovery may lend weight to a legend that the ruler established a camp there, potentially providing physical evidence for a place remembered in that account. The connection remains a possibility rather than confirmation that the legendary camp has been identified.

Magnus Maximus also occupies a place in medieval literature: he is known as Macsen Wledig in the Mabinogion stories. The discovery thus brings an ancient defensive site into relation with a ruler whose memory survived in later storytelling. At the centre of that connection is the possibility that the newly uncovered fortification could support the tradition of his camp in Wales.
