An archaeologist has discovered an ancient fortification, a structure built for protection, in Wales. The site is linked to Magnus Maximus, a Roman emperor who ruled in the fourth century. Its discovery may support a legend that he established a camp in Wales, offering possible evidence that the camp really existed.
Magnus Maximus also appears in the Mabinogion, a collection of medieval stories, under the name Macsen Wledig. The ruler therefore has a place both in Roman history and in the storytelling of the Middle Ages. The newly discovered fort may connect the account of his Welsh camp with a surviving ancient site.
