Ancient bones show signs of injury and care

An ancient human probably died from a wooden spear. An older tooth injury suggests that others helped this person during life.

About 75,000 years ago, an ancient human died at about 45 years old. This person was a Neanderthal. Researchers call them Shanidar A. They found their bones in Shanidar Cave in Iraq.

A shoulder bone has a round hole, 1.5 centimetres wide. Researchers think a wooden spear went through the chest and made the hole. A spear is a long stick with a sharp end. They do not know if someone attacked this person or if a hunting accident happened.

A front tooth also broke during life, probably after a serious face injury. The person lived for at least another year. Researchers think others helped them. Their burial in the cave also suggests care after death.
