Airbnb sets new rules for cleaning before guests leave

From 20 November, Airbnb guests will generally not have to wash dishes, remove bed sheets or take out rubbish. Hosts can still ask for small jobs.

Airbnb is changing its rules from 20 November. The changes affect hosts, the people who offer homes on Airbnb. Hosts generally cannot ask guests to wash dishes, remove bed sheets, wash clothes or take out rubbish before they leave. They cannot ask for jobs that take a lot of time or work. But they can ask guests to put used dishes in the sink or collect used towels.

Hosts can choose from seven standard house rules. These cover things such as arrival and leaving times, smoking, pets and quiet hours. Hosts can also add other reasonable requests. They must put these in a special part of the home’s page on Airbnb. They cannot give guests new rules after booking through messages, signs in the home or a conversation.

Airbnb will mark requests that break the policy. Hosts must remove them or ask Airbnb to review its decision. Hosts who keep breaking the rules may appear lower in search results. Hosts also cannot charge guests extra for leaving a listed cleaning job undone.
