Teaching the Body’s Cells to Fight Disease

MIT researchers changed cells inside mice to fight cancer and stop attacks on the liver.

MIT researchers found a new way to change natural killer cells. These cells help protect the body. Tiny fat particles carry instructions into them. The cells then attack their targets. Researchers do not need to take them out of the body. This could save time and money.

In mice, the method changed about 80 percent of the target cells. Skin cancer disappeared in three of five treated mice. In another test, cancer in T cells disappeared after five shots. T cells also help protect the body.

Some T cells attack the body's own liver cells. After one shot, these harmful cells died and liver damage healed in mice. The FDA has not approved any CAR NK cell treatments.
