India highlighted changes in farming at SIAL Paris, held from 17 to 21 October 2026. More than 140 Indian exporters took part in its display. Jawed Ashraf, chairman of the India Trade Promotion Organisation, described a transformation led by small farmers. Their approach involves using fewer chemicals and adopting technology to manage water and protect crops more efficiently.
Among the visitors was Priyanka Rhushikesh Mohite, an agricultural drone pilot from Nashik. She completed a month of training in Pune through a government programme for rural women and has flown since August 2024. Her drone spreads seeds and fertilisers, which provide nutrients for plants. According to Mohite, watering an acre previously required a full day and around 200 litres of water. Using the drone takes seven to eight minutes and 10 litres. Becoming a pilot has brought her greater respect in her community and opportunities to encourage other women.
The EU and India concluded a free trade agreement in January 2026, with signing expected by the end of the year. Such agreements reduce or remove taxes on traded goods and make international trade easier. Ashraf believes farmers and small businesses could benefit, provided they meet European market requirements and connect with buyers. He also wants Indian food exporters to develop distinctive products with a recognisable presence in Europe.
