Viral cinema video prompts $146,000 fundraiser for long-serving worker

What began as a modest effort to help an elderly cinema employee became a $146,000 retirement fundraiser after Brooklyn Green's TikTok video attracted widespread attention.

A spontaneous trip to the cinema led Brooklyn Green, 21, to raise $146,000 for an elderly employee in Maryville, Tennessee. Green had decided to watch a film at her local AMC when she noticed Mary, a worker with a bent back, collecting rubbish. Struck by Mary's dedication to the job, she filmed her pushing and pulling a rubbish cart and posted the clip on TikTok. The encounter prompted Green to organise an online fundraiser through GoFundMe, intended to help Mary retire.

Her original ambition was modest: she hoped contributions from relatives and friends might cover approximately a month's rent. Instead, the video went viral, directing viewers towards the fundraising page. Donations exceeded $100,000 within the first day. When Green returned to the cinema the following day, hoping to surprise Mary, the amount raised had increased by a further $46,000, bringing the total to $146,000. Mary was absent that day, so Green spoke to the manager overseeing the shift instead.

The manager explained that Mary had spent more than 45 years working in cinemas and loved the work. He also conveyed her concern that giving up her job at her age might lead to a decline in her wellbeing. Green eventually met Mary and presented the surprise in an encounter recorded for donors. Mary expressed her gratitude to everyone who had contributed. The fundraising effort offered financial support for retirement, while Mary's attachment to her job remained part of her story.
