MIT scientists found a new way to change cells inside the body. These cells help fight disease. Tiny balls of fat carry instructions into cells called natural killer cells. The instructions teach them to find and kill harmful cells. Scientists do not need to take them out of the body.
The team tested the method in mice. They changed about 80 per cent of the cells they aimed for. In a skin cancer test, cancer disappeared in three of five mice. In another test, cancer in cells called T cells disappeared after five injections.
Some mice had T cells attacking their liver. After one injection, these harmful cells died and liver damage healed. The method could save time and money when making cells to fight disease.
