Robot moves like a worm on land and in water

WorMa moves water inside its body to help it climb and swim.

Researchers at New York University have made a robot called WorMa. It moves like a worm. It can cross rocks, climb hills and move into and out of water. A pump moves water between its head and tail. This changes where its weight sits.

More weight at the head helps it climb and pull itself out of water. More weight at the tail helps it swim faster. It moves water back and forth to climb steps up to 15 centimetres high.

The robot could help people check nature and buildings. The team is working on faster pumps. It also wants the robot to notice changes in the ground and move its water by itself.
