Porto has taken first place in the European friendliest city category of Condé Nast Traveller’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards. Lisbon finished second, giving Portugal the two leading places. Readers voted for cities where visitors receive a warm welcome and local people are willing to help, whether someone needs to understand a restaurant menu or find their way on the underground.
The magazine links Porto’s growing popularity as a destination for short breaks to its food and culture. It also praises the city’s genuine character and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can spend time in squares decorated with tiles or share small dishes of local food with residents in neighbourhood restaurants.
Lisbon stands on seven hills beside the River Tagus. Its winding streets, traditional music and creamy custard pastries are part of its appeal, but the magazine places particular importance on its people. Travellers can enjoy the café culture or join outdoor celebrations during the Festival of Saint Anthony. Amsterdam, Stockholm and Valletta complete the top five, in that order.
