Nvidia used JUPITER, a very powerful computer in Germany, to model a quantum computer. Quantum computers use basic units called qubits. This model had 104 qubits and could find and correct errors during its work. Nvidia says it is the largest full model of this kind so far. The test ran on ordinary computer technology, not a real quantum computer.
Small disturbances can cause errors in quantum computers. Nvidia included these problems in its model. The team tested a way to prepare special quantum states. These states help quantum computers do certain calculations. Making them can take many extra qubits. Nvidia says its method needs 90% fewer qubits than earlier methods.
The team used 8,192 powerful computer processors at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. It first developed and tested its methods on a smaller system at Nvidia’s own research centre. The company says this work cut the time needed from weeks to days. Such models could help researchers check a design before they build a real quantum computer.
