Meta develops Max humanoid prototype with Fourier

Meta and Shanghai-based Fourier have developed a humanoid prototype and begun work on its successor. The research project reflects Meta's ambition to give its Muse AI agent a physical form for household tasks.

Meta has developed a humanoid prototype with Chinese robotics company Fourier in approximately three months, according to The Information. Internally named Max, the robot stands about 1.5 metres tall and weighs around 48 kilograms. A second version is already in development.

Powered by Nvidia's Jetson Thor chip, Max features a screen that imitates facial expressions, integrated speakers and five-fingered hands capable of picking up small objects. Meta's robotics team travelled to China for the collaboration. Li-Chen Miller, its vice president of product for robotics, spent almost two months at Fourier's Shanghai factory.

Meta presented Max to a group of employees at its internal robotics summit in late August. Development of Max 2 got under way the following month. The successor is intended to incorporate a redesigned torso, improved hands, a projector and additional sensors to help it negotiate stairs.

Meta envisages humanoids as a physical embodiment of Muse, its AI agent, with the eventual aim of performing household tasks. Nvidia, which supplies Max's chip, has also agreed to invest $3 billion in Meta and expand their collaboration on Muse. Meta strengthened its robotics operation in May by acquiring Assured Robot Intelligence, a San Diego start-up whose team joined Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Fourier previously unveiled its GR-3 humanoid in August 2025, presenting the 165-centimetre robot as a companion, including for older adults. Meta, however, says its collaboration with Fourier is intended for internal research and experimentation, with no plans to sell the units. It has not set a launch date for a humanoid product.
