Karl Bushby comes home after 28 years

Karl Bushby has finished a 50,000-kilometre journey from Chile to Hull. He walked and swam, and many people helped him.

British adventurer Karl Bushby reached his mother’s home in Hull, England, on 2 November 2026. He finished a journey of 50,000 kilometres across four continents. Bushby is 57 and was a soldier before his journey.

He started in Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998. He had two rules: he could not use transport to move forward, and he had to walk home. He planned to finish in 12 years, but the journey took 28 years. Problems with permission to enter countries, difficult weather and the pandemic caused long delays.

Bushby also swam during his journey. He spent 31 days crossing the Caspian Sea because problems between countries blocked his way through Russia and Iran. He swam across the English Channel in early October and reached Britain.

Up to 1,000 people welcomed him in the centre of Hull before he reached his mother Angela’s home. He also returned to his son Adam, 36, and met his 12-year-old granddaughter for the first time. Bushby thanked the many people who helped him. Strangers gave him food, places to stay and care when he was ill.
