Greece proposes social media age limit of 15

A proposed Greek law would ban under-15s from social media and make platforms responsible for checking users’ ages without collecting unnecessary personal information.

Greece is preparing a law that would prevent children under 15 from using social networking services, including Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. The rules are expected to take effect on 1 January 2027, allowing companies time to prepare. Under the proposal, platforms would be responsible for checking whether users meet the age requirement.

Kids Wallet and Gov.gr Wallet are expected to help with these checks. They use digital proof of age, allowing a service to confirm that someone is old enough without seeing their full identity details. Companies could choose other methods, provided they meet European legal requirements. The checks must be reliable, work in everyday use and prevent people from getting around the age limit.

The government says the proposal aims to protect children’s health while respecting users’ privacy. Concerns about social media include anxiety, depression, online bullying and difficulties with concentration. Ministers also argue that parents need support against systems designed to keep children connected. The government believes an age limit and reliable checks will reduce these risks, but the measure’s success depends on platforms meeting their responsibilities.
