Gemini AI agents complete Minecraft autonomously in a 27-hour experiment

Four Gemini 4 Argon agents independently organised a successful Minecraft run, although software assistance, Easy difficulty and the single-run design qualify the achievement.

Four AI agents powered by Google’s Gemini 4 Argon defeated Minecraft’s Ender Dragon without human intervention, completing the game in 27 hours and 14 minutes. Google DeepMind researchers placed them in a randomly generated survival world on Easy difficulty, with cheat commands disabled. They received a goal, but no assigned roles or strategy.

Rather than interpreting screenshots or operating keyboards, the agents controlled players by writing JavaScript programs through Mineflayer, an open-source software library. They independently divided responsibilities, making tools, gathering supplies and preparing shelters. Chat messages and shared notes helped them exchange coordinates, warn of threats and retrieve teammates’ possessions after deaths. Across the run, they produced 2,783 programs, exchanged 229 messages and died 605 times. The final battle lasted nearly 14 hours. Around 21 hours into the experiment, one agent identified ten crystals that were healing the dragon. Destroying them took another four hours and 40 minutes; the dragon fell 39 minutes later.

The achievement nevertheless has important qualifications. Mineflayer provided precise information about nearby blocks and creatures, even behind solid rock, while a plugin planned routes. Twenty-two per cent of programs ended in errors, and the findings rest on a single run. A fifth agent monitored for cheating and found none. Including that observer, the session cost approximately $810 at introductory list prices, or $1,620 at standard prices. The researchers describe it as the first autonomous completion using standard Mineflayer without advance knowledge of the world or additional game-specific tools written by humans.
