From university to a career fixing ski lifts

Victoria Madsen trained at work to become a ski-lift mechanic. The career has brought greater financial security, although some future goals still feel uncertain.

Victoria Madsen, 25, has worked as a ski-lift mechanic at Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah for about five years. She maintains the machines that carry skiers up the mountain. However, this was not her original career plan. She was studying English at Utah Valley University and hoped to become a lawyer.

During her third year at university, Madsen took a seasonal job at Sundance. When the ski season finished, she received an offer to stay as a mechanic. Although she had no experience repairing machines, the team promised to train her. The position also paid $3 more an hour than her previous job. She eventually left university because she was already earning more than she had expected to earn after graduating.

The work helped Madsen afford her own flat and a new car. She is proud of her career and says she earns more than most of her friends. Despite this greater financial security, she remains unsure whether she will ever be able to buy a house or have children. For now, she is happy with her choice.
