A large fire has badly damaged the Eagle’s Nest in the mountains of Bavaria, Germany. No one was inside, and no one was hurt. The building had a restaurant, an outdoor area for drinking beer and a display about its history. It had already closed for the evening.
About 200 emergency workers fought the fire through the night. The roads up the mountain were narrow and full of bends. Strong wind and rain made their work difficult, and later snow fell.
Police have arrested a 33-year-old German man, and he is now staying in a hospital for mental health care. They believe someone started the fire on purpose. They are checking whether the building’s history was a reason for the fire.
Workers finished the building in 1938 as a place for important Nazi leaders to visit and rest. Adolf Hitler rarely used it. Bavaria’s government owns the building, and officials say the damage is very serious. The government plans to discuss its future with experts on history, local officials and people who protect old buildings.
