FBI says North Korea stole billions from Binance

Binance lost about $6.3 billion in digital money. The company says it will pay for all the losses, not its users.

The FBI, a US police agency, says North Korea stole about $6.3 billion from Binance around 29 October. Binance is the world's largest service for buying and selling digital money. The FBI linked the attack to a group called TraderTraitor.

Binance says the attackers may have first entered its computer systems through an engineer's laptop. But the company also found other security problems. It says the attack had several parts, and it is working with police to investigate.

Binance stopped people from putting money in or taking it out during security checks. On 1 November, it started letting people take money out again in stages. People could also put money into the service.

The company says it now has money and digital coins to cover about 95% of the stolen amount. The last 5% consists of digital coins that are harder to buy in large amounts. Binance has set aside more than $6.34 billion of its own money. It says it will pay for all the losses, so users will not have to pay.
