Explore Sigulda’s autumn colours and castles

A short train journey from Riga brings visitors to Sigulda, where autumn woodland surrounds a river valley, caves and castles.

Sigulda is known as Latvia’s autumn capital because its many trees turn yellow, orange and red as the weather becomes colder. The town is around an hour and ten minutes from Riga by train. Although the town itself has attractive autumn scenery, some of the best views are around the Gauja River.

Visitors can cross the river by cable car on a seven-minute journey over the valley, with several castles visible along the route. On the other side, a short woodland walk leads to Gutman’s Cave, the largest cave in the Baltic countries. Its walls contain carvings left by visitors over centuries. Another short walk brings visitors to Turaida Castle, which dates from 1214. The main tower offers wide views, while exhibitions explain the castle’s history.

Sigulda is also a starting point for exploring Gauja National Park on foot. The town’s patterned walking sticks are a local symbol and are available to buy at the New Castle. For visitors who prefer not to walk to Turaida Castle, buses leave once an hour.
