Europe debates money and rules for satellite networks

With its space budget ending in 2027, the EU is discussing future funding and access to radio frequencies. Sateliot is preparing to expand its network and move towards European launches.

European officials and satellite company Sateliot met at the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss the future of communications from space. The EU’s current space budget ends in 2027, so future funding is an important issue. Participants also discussed radio frequencies, which satellites use to send signals. Greater control over networks and data is part of Europe’s aim to act independently.

Sateliot connects devices such as sensors and trackers in areas where ground networks do not reach. The company has launched 11 satellites in total, including five with SpaceX. Its next launch is planned for July 2027, again with SpaceX. However, a launch planned for late 2027 will use the Spanish company PLD Space. It will carry Sateliot’s first two Tritó satellites, which are designed to connect ordinary phones directly through 5G.

To support its expansion, Sateliot is seeking €150 million from investors. Its goal is a network of more than 500 satellites. These plans come as Europe considers both financial support and rules governing satellite communications.
