EU court backs rules for Apple

A court in Luxembourg has rejected Apple’s challenge to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act rules. The decision confirms that iOS and the App Store can be treated as gatekeepers, and Apple plans to appeal.

Apple has lost a major court case in the European Union. The company had challenged its gatekeeper status under the Digital Markets Act, or DMA, which is the EU law for large digital platforms.

The General Court in Luxembourg rejected Apple’s arguments about iOS and the App Store. It also found Apple’s challenge over iMessage unacceptable. The ruling means Apple may have to ease its control over app store rules.

Apple said it disagrees with the decision and argues that the DMA could affect security and privacy. The company plans to take the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
