Alibaba, the Chinese technology company, has decided to ban its staff from using Anthropic’s Claude Code from 10 July. The company said the tool poses a security risk. Instead, Alibaba is asking employees to use Qoder, which it has developed itself. Anthropic already blocks Chinese companies, and foreign firms owned by them, from using its models. It is also working to close gaps that could allow Chinese users to access Claude systems. Anthropic said a version of Claude Code that could secretly identify Chinese users was part of an experiment started in March. A company representative said the team has since taken stronger steps and plans to remove that feature.
