Moana live-action film opens weakly

Disney’s live-action Moana opened with low box office numbers. The film may end up costing Disney a large sum of money.

Disney released a live-action version of Moana this week. The company had high hopes for it because the two animated Moana films were very successful.

The new film earned 43 million dollars in the United States during its first weekend. Its total worldwide box office has reached 95 million dollars. Disney spent 250 million dollars to make the film and a further 145 million dollars to promote it. Early analysis suggests that the film could leave Disney with a loss of 125 million dollars.

The story is set in ancient Polynesia and follows a brave young woman who sets out on a dangerous mission. She wants to prove herself as a skilled explorer and complete her ancestors’ unfinished search. Catherine Laga'aia plays Moana, and Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, the half-god who joins her on the journey.
